New Delhi, Dec 18 (IANS) India’s cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, who recently retired from all forms of the game, is the most searched sportsperson and also features among the top-10 most searched Indian personalities of 2013, according to Google.

Besides Tendulkar, the other most searched sportspersons are athletic legend Milkha Singh, India cricket skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Lionel Messi, Roger Federer, Sania Mirza, Rahul Dravid, Chris Gayle, Ravindra Jadeja and Saina Nehwal.

In a survey carried out by Google India, the much scandalised 2013 Indian Premier League (IPL) is the second in the top trending list. This year’s IPL was rocked with charges of spot-fixing and betting charges.

Google India in a statement said that the sixth edition of the IPL broke records for the amount of online searches for latest scores and results.

“From a search trends perspective, 2013 was clearly the year of entertainment. Shah Rukh’s Lungi Dance from Chennai Express, the Bollywood romantic drama Aashiqui 2, national heart-throbs Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif, Telugu actor Kajal and her counterpart, the young rebel star Prabhas and singer Honey Singh ruled 2013 and drove millions of Indians to the web,” said Rajan Anandan, VP and managing director, sales and operations, Google India.

Dravid, who led Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, and India’s Olympic bronze medallist Saina Nehwal also featured among the top-10 most searched news.

Dravid was in the news after his three Rajasthan Royals team mates Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan were arrested by Delhi Police for their involvement in spot-fixing in the IPL. Dravid has agreed to be a prosecution witness in the case.

Sachin Tendulkar vs Dale Steyn: It was one for the ages!

Tendulkar vs Steyn: One of the greatest cricketing rivalries

Tendulkar vs Steyn: One of the greatest cricketing rivalries

Cricket is perhaps the only team sports where a player’s individual performance can have massive impact on the outcome of a match. It is perhaps the only team sports where individual battles between the players can be more thrilling than the match itself.

Of all the sports that are played between a ball and a willow, cricket is easily the most technical. It requires a totally different set of skills with bat and the ball. Though every match pits a batsman against a bowler and vice-versa, a highly competitive match between bat and the ball remain a rarity. It is because of the miss-match between the skills of batsman and the bowler.

However, when it happens, it transcends the realms of earth. One such battle happened when India travelled South Africa towards the end of 2010 just before the ICC Cricket World Cup. It was a battle for the ages. It showed how beautiful a game of cricket can look when two highly skilled craftsmen battled it out in the middle.

It was the third and final Test of the series after both the teams won one match each.  Indian captain MS Dhoni won the toss and decided to bowl first. A brilliant century from Jacques Kallis helped South Africa reach 362. In response India didn’t get to a good start and lost Virender Sehwag and Rahul Dravid very early. In came Sachin Tendulkar and he steadily took India to 142-2 along with Gautam Gambhir by the end of 2nd days play.

Players get on to the arena on the third morning of the Test. The skies were clear and the conditions were perfect for a game of cricket. Dale Steyn charged in and bowls a delightful out swinger first up to Sachin Tendulkar. It landed in the corridor just outside the off- stump. Tendulkar shuffled across and chased the ball but it kept moving away and was comprehensively beaten.

The tone was set for the rest of the day.

Next ball, another out swinger, another Tendulkar stab, he misses it by a whisker resulting in a vociferous appeal from the keeper. Third ball – out swinger again – Tendulkar jabs at the ball uncomfortably and edge takes the ball past gully for a couple. Fourth ball, a jaffa from Steyn and Tendulkar was beaten for the umpteenth time in the same over.

Fifth ball of the over- another out swinger from Steyn but this time Tendulkar leans forward to the pitch of the ball and drove it gloriously past the extra-cover for a boundary. Last ball of the over- it hit Tendulkar on thigh pad and for once there was no drama.

The ball swung and seamed of the pitch. Steyn was swinging and seaming the ball at high pace. It is one thing to play fast bowling and a totally different preposition to play a fast moving ball. Dale Steyn bowling that day was exhibition of perfect out swingers, frequently beating the outside edge of the bat. His balls repeatedly landed on middle stump before astonishingly moving away off the pitch.

If Steyn didn’t pick any wicket in his first spell of that day, it was only because he bowled every ball of that spell to Sachin Tendulkar. On any other day Tendulkar would have countered Steyn by attacking him but that day he decided to defend and was ready to take few blows on body too. He was beaten a million time but he stuck it out at the crease. He survived and played few exquisite cover drives in between.

Tendulkar missed, played, got hurt and then went to score a 100

It was a battle of wills and nerves. Steyn foxed Tendulkar every second ball but Tendulkar didn’t get out to him. When he was not facing Steyn, he cashed on the loose deliveries from other bowlers. A minor error in line or length and Tendulkar ruthlessly punished the bowl.

It was a very un-Tendulkar innings. He was not fluent and at times didn’t look comfortable at the crease. He played for survival. He understood the importance of this innings. India was never so close to win a test series in South Africa. He played; he missed but managed to survive the hostility of a charged up Dale Steyn.

When Steyn returned for another spell, he nipped out Pujara and Dhoni in a span of 12 balls. For the remaining 18 balls of that spell, he bowled to Tendulkar without any success.

It was one of those days when in a true sense cricket was the winner. Tendulkar finished with 146 off 314 and Steyn with 5 for 75. It easily goes down in the history of game as one the best on field battles. Dale Steyn bowled one of his best spells while Tendulkar went on to play one of his best innings.

Tendulkar later revealed that he decided not to play at anything that was outside the line of his head in the morning session. The wicket was fresh making the ball to swing severely. It clearly shows that he played the inning with a level head and made a conscious effort to tackle the Dale Steyn aggression. He went on to record and admitted that it was one of the best sessions of his life in Test cricket.

Despite their heroic performances, they couldn’t take their teams to victory. There was another super performer in the match; Jacques Kallis who scored twin centuries in the match as the match ended in a draw.

The match will forever be remember as Steyn vs Tendulkar match. If Tendulkar’s innings was a master class then Dale Steyn probably deserved wicket of every delivery he bowled in that spell. It was a spell bounding day of Test cricket. The first over of the day alone was worth the money.

When both the teams will step on the field again tomorrow, this great rivalry will be sorely missed. It is India’s first Test match post Tendulkar’s retirement. The onus is on young brigade of India to take the legacy of the great man forward. It won’t be easy though as Dale Steyn is still at the top of his prowess. Hopefully this series will mark the beginning of a new age rivalry.

No Sachin Tendulkar makes life easier for Proteas: SA coach Domingo

JOHANESBURG: Rubbing salt into the wounds after inflicting two humiliating defeats, South Africa coach Russell Domingo declared that it will be easier for the home team to plan against India as visitors lack the “claming influence” ofSachin Tendulkar in their dressing room.

Tendulkar, who retired from international cricket last month was very successful during India’s last tour of South Africa in 2010-11 where he scored two centuries in three Test matches.

“He was a big player for them and was a calming influence in the dressing room. It will be great not having to get Sachin Tendulkar out,” Proteas coach Domingo was quoted as saying by the ‘City Press’.

Adding insult to injury, Domingo said that they would like to exploit the age-old Indian weakness of not being able to play fast bowling.

“It’s a big advantage. We spoke at the beginning of the one-day series that we wanted to put doubt in their minds in terms of the way that they play pace. They have always had issues playing pace in South Africa and that is what history shows.” Domingo said.

“It (pace) is a South African strength. It is the way that we were brought up playing cricket. Sub-continent sides will always turn to spin as an attacking option and South Africans will turn to pace because that is in our DNA,” the coach added.

Domingo made it clear that they would like to go with a four-pronged pace attack.

“Having a four-pronged pace attack is important for us against a country like India in our conditions.”

The South African coach said that he would like to stick to the seven-batsman policy.

“The side has been successful with the seven-batsman strategy and I’d probably like to continue that. It is still early in my test tenure to want to make too many wholesale changes to what has worked well over the last period of time,” Domingo said.

My first inning has ended, second is about to begin: Sachin Tendulkar

A twenty-four-year-long habit can be mighty difficult to quit. More so when the person in question is Sachin Tendulkar who is used to having a billion eyes following him day in and day out.

The recently-retired cricketing maestro in a candid tete-a-tete with Zee Media`s Sumit Awasthi said the feeling was yet to sink in and he was yet to come to terms with the fact that his cricketing career was all but over. But the cricketer in him was far from satisfied. “It is yet to sink in. But the guilty feeling that one would have with by missing practice or failing to wake up early is gone. There is no pressure on me now,” said Tendulkar.

The ‘little master’ informed that his farewell speech (that left many in tears) was partly rehearsed and partly on the spur of the moment. “I had planned (the speech) and what I wanted to say. There were names on the paper, but words came from the heart,” he said.

The decision to retire he said was his, and he is now convinced that it was the right time. There were no regrets he said, adding, “I think the time was right. Every person that I shared my plan about retirement got emotional. But I wasn’t emotional at all, I knew it was the right time and the right decision. And the manner in which my last series panned out and the send-off I got—the way all these things coincided left no scope for any regret.”

And Tendulkar had one more thing planned out — the venue for his farewell, Mumbai. And this was to give his mother a surprise. “I wanted my last match to happen in India. And more so when there were two matches planned (against West Indies) I asked them to hold it in Mumbai because I wanted to surprise my mother,” said Tendulkar.

Imran Khan says Sachin Tendulkar lucky for not facing the great West Indies pace attack

Former Pakistan World Cup winning captain, Imran Khan, tagged Sachin Tendulkar as “lucky” because Tendulkar didn’t have to face up to the ferocious West Indies pace attack of ’70 and ’80s.

Imran Khan

Imran Khan, delivering a lecture on leadership at the All India Management Association function in New Delhi, said that batting against the likes of Andy Roberts, Michael Holding, Joel Garner, Malcolm Marshall and Colin Croft was a big challenge and it needed special skills to handle them.

Imran Khan also pointed out the even someone as talented as Sylvester Clark couldn’t get a look into the Windies XI because the top four strike bowlers were irreplaceable.

“There was Sylvester Clark, who used to be on the bench mostly but on a rebel tour of South Africa, he demolished the opposition single-handedly.”

The former Pakistan great also sympathized with the former Indian opener, Sunil Gavaskar and said that Gavaskar did something that none other Indian batsmen, including Tendulkar, had to face.

“My friend, the poor guy, Sunny Gavaskar bore the brunt of the West Indian fast-bowling attack. Sachin is very lucky that he didn’t face them.”

Taliban claims it’s not against Sachin Tendulkar as reported

Sachin Tendulkar

The Pakistan Taliban, which was earlier said to have criticised Pakistan media for praising Sachin Tendulkar, has said that media had “fabricated” the statements of its spokesperson on the subject.

In its statement today, the shura council of Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) said that it will target the journalists who had carried the statement of their spokesperson Shahidullah Shahid on Sachin Tendulkar and Pakistan cricket team.

“In Tuesday’s meeting, we decided to target only journalists and media organisations which twisted the recent statement of Shahidullah Shahid and tried to tarnish Taliban’s image nationally and internationally,” an unnamed senior leader of Taliban was quoted as saying by The News Daily.

“The task has been given to a select group of people within the Taliban to collect information about the journalists and media organisations who fabricated statement of the spokesman,” he said.

According to PTI, a short video clip showing Taliban criticising Pakistan media over Tendulkar’s retirement, which was doing rounds on the social media, was only a part of a bigger video.

The full video reveals that the TTP spokesperson Shahidullah Shahid was not criticizing the media, but saying that those who are opposed to calling dead militants as martyrs, are like people who refuse to praise Tendulkar because he is an Indian.

Sachin Tendulkar comes up with new idea for juniors

Sachin Tendulkar on Tuesday came up with a suggestion that could give Mumbai youngsters more opportunities to play.

After being felicitated by the Mumbai Cricket Association president Sharad Pawar at the association’s BKC clubhouse, Tendulkar said: “The club culture is fantastic in Mumbai, that’s why we have won 40 Ranji Trophy titles. The introduction of IPL in cricket saw the game go to small towns. With so much competition around, it is important to do something to stay ahead of others in the competition.”

“We should come up with something new that will help us become more competitive. To create an opportunity for young cricketers, I’d suggest that instead of fielding 11 players, we should have all the 15 players playing and rotate them at the school or college levels, in the Harris Shield and Giles Shield. Youngsters coming from far are not sure if they will play. Hence, they have to be left out for no fault of theirs. This suggestion will only create opportunities for players. Around 10,000 cricketers will benefit and selectors will get to see talent,” he said.

Tendulkar also clarified that this idea was not because his son Arjun is coming up. “Success or failure. I’d back Arjun because I want him to enjoy the game. But that is not the case with everyone.
There is not much backing for others whose parents would want them to do something else. It is all about giving opportunity to the youngsters.”

A day out with Sachin Tendulkar

Hyderabad: An eight-year-old city student Mohammed Wajid Ali has managed to accomplish something that not even boys twice his age can boast of, and that is the privilege of getting to play cricket with none other than Sachin Tendulkar.

The Class III student of Diamond Jubilee School in Tolic-howki, he was the one of lucky winners selected from over 6,000 entries at a scholarship contest by Aviva Life Insurance.

Besides scholarship prize of ` 25,000, Wajid and 19 other students from across the country were given the once-in a-lifetime opportunity to play with the Master Blaster. As part of the selection process, students between the ages of 3 to 12 years were picked out based on their answers to the question `What’s Your Big Plan?’.

Wajid’s doting father Sajid accompanied him to Mumbai for the big event, which took place on November 28 and 29.

“We found out about Wajid’s selection at the end of September and we were all ecstatic. Not many people get to meet Sachin Tendulkar, so it was a golden moment in our lives.

There was a felicitation ceremony first and then the children got to play with the legendary cricketer,“ shares Sajid, who works as a computer operator. Wajid, who actively participates in sportsrelated activities at school, chips in, “Sachin gave us tips on how to play, how to hold the bat etc. All of us had a very good time. Even my friends and teachers are very proud of me.“

Interestingly, Sajid’s older sister had also applied for the competition, but she didn’t make it to the finals. Never-theless, the family is proud of both the children. So what does the eight-year old want to become when he grows up?

“Wajid wants to become a doctor when he grows up. I will do my best to encourage and support him,“ says his father.
